The
most common ailment to affect travelers to any destination in South
or Central America is traveler’s diarrhea. The best way to avoid it
is to be careful about what you eat. Some basic rules:
Eat
only fruit that you can peel when buying it at markets or on the
street.
Wash
your hands frequently with soap and dry them thoroughly with a clean
cloth. Don’t bite your nails or otherwise put your fingers in
your mouth.
Don’t
buy food (other than unpeeled fruit) from street vendors, and focus
on eating at places that look like they take care in the preparation
of their food. If a lot of foreigners eat there, it’s almost
certainly safe to eat there.
The
tap water in Ecuador and Peru is not safe to drink. You should
drink bottled water only. You should also use bottled water to
brush your teeth.
