The Aqua Amazon Riverboat Cruise Overview

This itinerary varies depending on whether you choose the 3, 4, or 7 night cruise.  The 3 night cruise departs on Saturdays from Iquitos, the 4 night cruise departs on Tuesdays from Nauta, and the 7 night cruise departs on Saturdays from Iquitos and combines the two shorter itineraries. Typically travelers fly from Lima to Iquitos the day that the cruise starts and are transferred by land to the Iquitos Wharf or to the village of Nauta.

3 Night Itinerary

Day 1      Saturday Arrive to Iquitos / Begin the Cruise

Upon arrival at Iquitos you will be met at the airport by one of the Aqua Amazon’s guides, who will transfer you to the nearby wharf to board your ship.

Once onboard, you will have time to relax and settle in while the boat begins navigating along the Amazon River. You will have a safety drill and briefing, followed by a welcome dinner. In the evening you will have time to relax and enjoy the jungle scenery from the observation deck.

Day 2       Sunday Charo Lake / Yacapana Islands

This morning you will board the skiffs for a river exploration and fishing excursion at Charo Lake. Your naturalist guides will help you identify terns, egrets, orioles, hawks, kingfishers, monkeys, and other local wildlife. At Charo Lake you will fish for piranhas and other Amazon fish.

After lunch back aboard the Aqua Amazon, you will head back out on the skiffs to visit the Yacapana Islands, also dubbed the “Iguana Islands” for their resident reptiles. As you explore the waterways by skiff, you may see gray and pink freshwater dolphins. As the sun begins to set, you may also observe caiman, frogs, owls and capybara, the world’s largest rodent, before returning to the boat for dinner.

Day 4       Tuesday Village Visit / Manatee Rescue Center / Return to Lima

This morning the Aqua Amazon will reach the headwaters of the Amazon River, where two major tributaries, the Ucayali and the Marañon, converge to ‘give birth’ to the world’s greatest waterway. You will board the skiffs for your morning excursion, and may pass large-billed terns, laughing falcons, gray tanagers, sandpipers, parakeets, short-tailed parrots, and other colorful birds. You will disembark at a riverside Cocama Indian village to meet the local community, see how they live, and purchase some local handicrafts to take home. On your way back to the boat you will pass the world’s largest aquatic plant, giant water lilies known as Victoria Regias.

After lunch aboard, you will disembark. En route to Iquitos airport, your naturalist guides will bring you to the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have rescued. After the visit you will be transferred to the Iquitos Airport for your flight back to Lima.

Day 2       Wednesday Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve

This morning you will board the skiffs for your first excursion through a “gallery forest,” so named because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As you float through this tunnel, your naturalist guides will help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

After lunch back aboard the boat, you will have time to relax before your evening excursion through the “Mirrored Forest” to see towering trees reflected in the black water river. Here, you will watch for parrots, blue-yellow macaws, and a variety of primates and sloths. As you make your way back to the Aqua Amazon, your guides will point out caimans and frogs in the water and fishing bats overhead.

Day 3       Thursday Hatum Posa Lake – Pacaya River

This morning you will rise early to cruise the magnificent Hatum Posa Lake. As you follow the shoreline you may see many species of monkeys and birds, including terns, neo-tropic cormorants, egrets, herons, hawks, and horned screamers. From here you continue by skiff into other black water lakes in the flooded forest. After your excursion you will return to the Aqua Amazon for breakfast, followed by a jungle walk or a visit to a local village.

In the late afternoon you will board the skiffs to explore the Pacaya River, journeying from Ranger Station No. 1 toward Yanayacu Lake, home to an abundance of wildlife. This time of day gives you the best chance to see activity among rainforest animals, including fluffy monk saki monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and howler monkeys. When night falls, you will make your way back to the Aqua Amazon, using spotlight torches to locate caimans, owls and capybara.

Day 4       Friday Pacaya River / Carocurahuayte Lake

This morning you will board the skiffs early to explore the Pacaya River as the sun rises. You may observe parrots, macaws, toucans, many kinds of monkeys, and other wildlife. You will enjoy breakfast aboard the skiffs as you cruise a popular dolphin feeding spot.

After lunch back onboard the Aqua Amazon, you will travel by skiff to Carocurahuayte Lake to fish for some of the more than 3,000 species of tropical fish that live in the Amazon Basin.

Once you are back on board, the ship will continue downstream, sailing toward Iquitos through the night. Tonight you will enjoy a recap of your trip before dinner.

Day 5       Saturday Belen Community Visit / Manatee Rescue Center / Return to Lima

After breakfast you will visit the lively riverside community of Belen, where the houses and shops actually float on the river during some months and a bustling food market supports the entire Peruvian Amazon, where the inhabitants of Amazonia sell and purchase their goods.

You will return to the boat for lunch before disembarking at Iquitos. En route to the Iquitos Airport, your naturalist guides will bring you to visit the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have rescued. After you visit you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Lima.
