The Aria Amazon Riverboat Cruise Overview

This itinerary varies depending on whether you choose the 3, 4, or 7 night cruise.  The 3 night cruise departs on Fridays from Iquitos, the 4 night cruise departs on Mondays from Nauta, and the 7 night cruise departs on Fridays from Iquitos and combines the two shorter itineraries. Typically travelers fly from Lima to Iquitos the day that the cruise starts and are transferred by land to the Iquitos Wharf or to the village of Nauta.

3 Night Itinerary

Day 1     Friday     Arrive to Iquitos / Begin the Cruise

Upon arrival at Iquitos you will be met at the airport by one of the Aria Amazon’s guides, who will transfer you to the nearby wharf to board your ship.

Once onboard, you will have time to relax and settle in while the boat begins navigating along the Amazon River. You will have a safety drill and briefing, followed by a welcome dinner. In the evening you will have time to relax and enjoy the jungle scenery from the observation deck.

Day 2     Saturday     Yacapana Islands / Yarapa River

This morning you will board the skiffs to visit the Yacapana Islands, also dubbed the “Iguana Islands” for their resident reptiles. You will also be able to fish for piranhas here, instructed by your naturalist guides.

After lunch aboard the Aria Amazon, you will head back out on the skiffs to explore the Yarapa River and search for gray and pink freshwater dolphins. As the sun begins to set, you may also observe caiman, frogs, owls and capybara, the world’s largest rodent, before returning to the boat for dinner.

Day 3     Sunday     Yanallpa Stream / Ucayali River

After breakfast you will set out to explore the Yanallpa Stream, looking for wildlife such as squirrel monkeys, saddleback tamarin monkeys, sloths and other species. Here you can walk among the rainforest trees that grow in these seasonally-flooded areas as our guides explain how the vegetation withstands the high water during the wet season.

After lunch onboard you will have time to relax before your late-afternoon excursion along the Ucayali River. Here, you may see dolphins along with many species of birds, including the vibrantly-colored macaw. As the sun sets, you watch for nocturnal wildlife, including the prehistoric-looking caimans.

Day 4     Monday     Village Visit / Manatee Rescue Center / Return to Lima

This morning the Aria Amazon will reach the headwaters of the Amazon River, where two major tributaries, the Ucayali and the Marañon, converge to ‘give birth’ to the world’s greatest waterway. You will board the skiffs for your morning excursion, and may pass large-billed terns, laughing falcons, gray tanagers, sandpipers, parakeets, short-tailed parrots, and other colorful birds. You will disembark at Puerto Miguel village to meet the local community, see how they live, and purchase some local handicrafts to take home. On your way back to the boat you will pass the world’s largest aquatic plant, giant water lilies known as Victoria Regias.

After lunch aboard, you will disembark. En route to Iquitos airport, your naturalist guides will bring you to the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have rescued. After the visit you will be transferred to the Iquitos Airport for your flight back to Lima.

4 Night Itinerary

Day 1     Monday     Arrive to Iquitos / Transfer to Nauta

Upon arrival at Iquitos you will be met at the airport by one of the Aria Amazon’s guides, who will help you with your luggage and take you to the air-conditioned bus that will drive you through the Peruvian countryside to the village of Nauta. Here, you will board the Aria Amazon to begin your cruise.

Once onboard, you will have time to relax and settle in while the boat begins navigating along the Amazon River. You will have a safety drill and briefing, followed by a welcome dinner. In the evening you will have time to relax and enjoy the jungle scenery from the observation deck.

Day 2     Tuesday     Gallery Forest / Village Visit

This morning you will board the skiffs for your first excursion through a “gallery forest,” so named because of its narrow vegetation that creates a tunnel of leaves. As you float through this tunnel, your naturalist guides will help you to spot parrots, macaws, and fluffy monk saki monkeys in the trees along the riverbanks.

After lunch back aboard the boat, you will disembark to walk into the jungle to visit a local village. Here, you will meet the local people and learn about subsistence farming in Amazonia, and your guides will help you identify the fruit trees and medicinal plants that comprise Amazonia’s natural pharmacy.

Day 3     Wednesday     Jungle Walk / Pacaya-Samiria Reserve

This morning you will take a jungle walk to learn about some of the sustainable resource management projects in Amazonia, and visit a site where villagers have planted palms to obtain oil. Here you will encounter wildlife, learn more about the Amazon’s natural pharmacy of medicinal plants, and wander under a canopy of kapok trees (ceiba pentandra), the tallest trees in the Amazon Basin.

In the late afternoon you will set out in the skiffs in search of dolphins and some of Pacaya-Samiria’s 13 species of monkeys, including tamarins, howlers, dusky titi and pigmy marmoset monkeys. You may also observe crocodiles and some of the more than 200 species of birds. As night falls and you navigate back to the boat, your guides will use spotlights to point out caimans, tree boas, tarantulas, and frogs.
Aria Amazon (B,L,D)

Day 4     Thursday     Yanayaquillo River / Charo Lake

This morning you will board the skiffs early to explore the Yanayaquillo River as the sun rises. You may observe parrots, macaws, toucans, many kinds of monkeys, and other wildlife. You will enjoy breakfast aboard the skiffs as you cruise a popular dolphin feeding spot.

After lunch back onboard the Aria Amazon, you will travel by skiff to Charo Lake to fish for some of the more than 3,000 species of tropical fish that live in the Amazon Basin.

Once you are back on board, the ship will continue downstream, sailing toward Iquitos through the night. Tonight you will enjoy a recap of your trip before dinner.
Aria Amazon (B,L,D)

Day 5     Friday     Belen Community Visit / Manatee Rescue Center / Return to Lima

After breakfast you will visit the lively riverside community of Belen, where the houses and shops actually float on the river during some months and a bustling food market supports the entire Peruvian Amazon, where the inhabitants of Amazonia sell and purchase their goods.

You will return to the boat for lunch before disembarking at Iquitos. En route to the Iquitos Airport, your naturalist guides will bring you to visit the Manatee Rescue Center, where biologists and volunteers care for endangered Amazon manatees that conservation authorities have rescued. After you visit you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Lima.
