Day by Day Itinerary

Included meals are indicated in parentheses: (B,L,D)

Day 1       Arrive to Belize/transfer to the Cayo District

Upon arrival in Belize your family will be met at the airport and have a private transfer to western Belize to your jungle lodge (1 1/2 hours scenic drive), set in a hilly section of the rainforest, right along the lovely Macal River. You will have the Family Suite, perfect for families from 4-6 people, with two floors, common social areas, and separate sleeping areas.

Day 2       Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

Today you will take an excellent but somewhat adventurous trip to Actun Tunichil Muknal, one of the great adventure caving experiences in the Americas, where you journey far back into a winding cave filled with ancient Mayan relics. There is no age limit for this excursion but your kids must be able to swim and walk in water for about 45 minutes. Another option for the adventurous family is a tubing expedition down the “river of caves”. This journey will carry you through 7 miles of caves by way of inner tube, floating past stalagtites and stalagmites. There are other great but less adventurous options available, please inquire if interested.

Day 3       Full day trip to the ruins of Tikal in Guatemala

Today you will take a full day trip over the border into Guatemala to see the ruins of Tikal (about 2 hours drive to the ruins, with private driver/guide). Tikal is undoubtedly one of the most impressive of all the Mayan sites in Central America, a sprawling complex of temples and residential structures, with several temples that rise above the jungle canopy, providing sweeping views of the surrounding rainforest environment. A wide variety of wildlife, including howler monkeys, make their home in the jungle around the ruins, and are often seen. After exploring the ruins, in the late afternoon you return to Belize for dinner and to relax.

Day 4       Free day for Optional Activities

Free day for optional activities in the Cayo District and around your lodge. Options include horseback riding, hiking, canoeing on the Macal River, bike riding, or visiting nearby Mayan ruins. (If you would rather have an extra day at the beach, rather than in the Cayo, an alternative is to add another day to your beach stay rather than here.)

Day 5       Transfer to the Beach in Placencia

After enjoying your final morning in the Cayo, you will be picked up for transfer down to the Caribbean coast in the southern part of Belize. The drive goes down the Hummingbird Highway, one of the most beautiful drives in all of Central America, where you will drop down from the highland to lowland rainforest and have great views of the mountain range that runs through the center of Belize (about 2 hours drive). Arrive to your beach hotel, one of the premier small hotels in the area, where you will have a 2 bedroom suite with common social areas (a great option for families).

Day 6      Snorkeling on the Barrier Reef

Today you’ll have a full day, private snorkeling excursion out to the Barrier Reef. You’ll make stops at some of the classic spots and also visit one or two of the islands that dot the reef. You’ll enjoy a barbeque lunch before returning to your hotel for the evening.
