Day by Day Itinerary

Note:  This extension can be done as a 3, 4 or 5 night trip.  The price above is for the suggested 4 night/5 day program detailed below, staying at the Altiplanico Rapa Nui, a first class small boutique hotel.  The excursions can be customized and if you are looking for an active trip, we can arrange longer hikes, sea kayaking and snorkeling.  Going for 2 nights is possible but is really not enough time (5 hour flight each way).  Explora Rapa Nui is a possible upgrade, and adds about $700 per person but includes all meals; at Explora tours are on a shared basis, rather than private as with the itinerary below; ask us for details.

Included meals are indicated in parentheses: (B,L,D)

Day 1       Arrive to Easter Island

In the morning you will fly from the mainland to Easter Island (5 hours), landing at the Mataveri airport.  Upon arrival you will be met by a local representative and transferred to your hotel.  You have the end of this first day to explore the area a bit on your own.
Hotel Altiplanico Rapa Nui (B) (this is a 4 star first class boutique hotel; Explora Rapa Nui is also available as an upgrade)

Day 2       Start your exploration of the Island

The following days will be spent exploring this fascinating island, enjoying the laid back rhythm of its people and the sheer beauty of the South Pacific setting, while trying to decipher the mysteries of its ancient culture, which left truly remarkable monumental sculptures all over the island.  After breakfast you will make your first visit to Ahu Vinapu, where you will find some of the highest quality stonework on the islands.  From here you will venture to the southernmost volcano on the Island, Rano Kau, where you can peer into the massive extinct crater from the rim.  The site offers exceptional views of the island and surrounding islets.  In the afternoon you will make a visit to Ahu Akivi, site of seven moai overlooking the expanse of the Pacific ocean.

Day 3       Explore the birth place of the ancient Moai

You will start the morning with a visit to Vaihu, and Ahu Akahanga, a large platform with four fallen statues, an important site in the island’s legends.  You will then continue to the Rano Raraku quarry, where the maoi were created.  A mysterious and beautiful place, numerous partially completed Moai lie around the quarry.  Down the slope towards the sea from the quarry stand 15 towering moai, at the stunning site of Ahu Tongariki.

Day 4       Free day to explore

You have the day free to explore more of Easter Island on your own.  If you would like to organize another excursion or activity please let us know.  There are other archeological sites to visit and beautiful beaches, and we can arrange more active excursions including longer hikes, sea kayaking, snorkeling, and even surfing.  (If you are spending only 3 nights, you would return back to Santiago today.)

Day 5       Return to Santiago / continue trip or return home

Today you transfer back to the airport for your return flight back to the mainland, where you can either fly back home or continue your trip.
