Day by Day Itinerary

Included meals are indicated in parentheses: (B,L,D)

Day 1     Arrive Rio de Janeiro

Arrive to Rio de Janeiro. Upon arrival you will be met at the airport by an English speaking guide who will welcome you to the country, transfer you to your hotel, and be there to assist you with any questions you have. Your hotel is located on Ipanema beach, the best place in Rio de Janeiro to be based for seeing what the city has to offer. The beachfront is one of the most beautiful in the world, and the area is both a great place to spend time on the beach and to stroll through the streets. Many of Rio’s best restaurants, boutiques, and cafes are located in Ipanema and neighboring Leblon. (If for any reason you prefer a different hotel in Rio, for example the Copacabana Palace, just let us know.)

Day 2       Rio de Janeiro: Corcovado mountain/Santa Teresa

Your first full day in Rio starts with a visit to the top of the Corcovado mountain to the Cristo Redentor statue, where you can take in the view out over all of Rio…. it has to be one of the best views in the world. Afterwards, you’ll do a drive through the historic Santa Teresa neighborhood, filled with mansions dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and get a chance to see Rio’s bustling downtown. You have the end of the day free to explore on your own.

Excursions up to the top of the Sugarloaf mountain for another superb view of Rio can also be arranged. Please inquire if interested.

Day 4       Salvador de Bahia

You will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Salvador de Bahia, located 1000 miles to the north of Rio. Upon arrival you will be transferred to your small hotel, located in a restored 19th century building in the heart of the Pelourinho, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the heart of this mesmerizing city. You have this first afternoon free to explore and get to know a bit of the city on your own.
Casa do Amarelindo (B)

Day 5       Salvador City Tour

In the morning you’ll have a half day tour of some of the colonial highlights of this fascinating city. You’ll learn about the hundreds of years of history that are the foundation of this city’s unique identity, deeply rooted in both European and African cultures.

Day 6       Day for optional excursions or to explore on your own

Free day in the Bahia area. You can take this day to immerse yourself in more of the city’s deep culture, or we can arrange a number of different excursions outside of the city. Options include gallery visits (we can provide a list of the most respected ones if you want to visit them on your own), visits to Cachoeira (a nearby colonial town), or visits to nearby islands and bays by boat.
Casa do Amarelindo (B)

Day 7       Manaus

Today you transfer to the airport to fly to Manaus, located in the middle of the Amazon jungle and the gateway to the Mamiraua Sustainable Development Reserve, home of the Uakari Jungle Lodge, probably the premier ecotourism project in all of Brazil. You spend the first night in a hotel just outside of Manaus… if time allows, we can arrange a city tour of Manaus, including a visit to the famed Opera House, built during the rubber boom of the early 20th century.
Tropical Manaus (B)

Day 8       Uakari Lodge/Mamiraua Reserve

You depart early by prop plane, flying one and a half hours west, following the Amazon river for several hundred miles. Upon arrival, you will be met for transfer to your jungle lodge, the renowned Uakari Lodge. This lodge was started by a Brazilian biologist who helped establish the 23,000 square mile sustainable development reserve that now surrounds it. The lodge is an integral part of this ecotourism project, which involves the local community in managing the reserve, and giving them the right to manage the reserve’s fishing resources in a sustainable manner. The Park is home to an astonishing array of wildlife, perhaps most notably the white coated and red faced Uakari monkey, but also including several other species of monkeys, tropical birds in variety and numbers that you would otherwise have to go to the Pantanal to see, and pink river dolphins. This is a real ecotourism lodge: accommodations are comfortable, but basic. Rooms have solar powered lights and showers with solar heated water. Meals are plentiful and very well prepared. You make forays into the surrounding reserve to spot wildlife with local guides and can also make an optional visit to a local community. This is one of the premier spots in the entire Amazon for viewing wildlife and experiencing real ecotourism. (This lodge is our first choice, but if you have less time or would prefer to stay in a jungle lodge closer to Manaus, we can arrange shorter stays at alternate lodges.)

Day 11      Depart for home

Today you transfer back to Tefe by boat, and start your trip home (there are direct flights from Manaus back to the United States, or in some cases you might fly back to Sao Paulo to connect with your flight to the U.S.). We can also include any extensions you would like or customize this trip. (B)
