Estancia Cerro Guido in Patagonia, Chile

The Best Cultural Stay in Patagonia

Return to Journal

Located about two hours from the town of Puerto Natales, the historic working ranch of Cerro Guido offers an authentic and deeply immersive Patagonian experience.

This family-owned estancia has been restored while preserving its traditional character, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking an all-inclusive lodge with strong cultural and historical ties to the region. As one of the last remaining working estancias in Patagonia, Cerro Guido is deeply committed to preserving its heritage, traditions, and teaching travelers about the region’s way of life.

Dating back to the 19th century, Cerro Guido is the largest estancia in the region, with extensive livestock and agricultural operations. The property spans over 90,000 hectares, and many of the included excursions take place entirely on its private land in the Sierra Baguales and Las Chinas areas.

This exclusivity allows guests to enjoy vast, untouched landscapes and hiking trails that are rarely shared with others, creating a very secluded experience.

A Working Estancia Experience

Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed by the estancia’s staff and given an introductory tour of the property. This includes visits to the horse stables and the shearing sheds—home to more than 20,000 sheep—where guests can learn about the traditional shearing process that has been practiced since the ranch’s founding, as well as the small on-site community.

The community includes a school, administrative buildings, and staff housing, offering insight into daily life on a working estancia.

The welcome experience begins with a traditional rueda, where guests are introduced to the staff, gauchos, and chefs. During this gathering, visitors are treated to hot mulled wine, traditional mate (yerba mate served in a gourd), and homemade alfajores filled with dulce de leche.

Cuisine at Cerro Guido

Cuisine at Cerro Guido is another highlight, featuring locally sourced ingredients, many of which come directly from the estancia’s organic garden. The culinary team takes pride in using regional vegetables, herbs, and meats.

Every Wednesday and Saturday, guests can enjoy a traditional asado featuring Patagonian lamb, various cuts of beef, and a generous spread of vegetables, grains, and desserts.
