Why I Keep Returning to Peru: A Family Journey Through Lima, Cusco & Machu Picchu

Return to Journal Next entry

I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Peru many times over the years. I’ve trekked its mountains, wandered its markets, and even lived for a while in Cusco. Yet no matter how many times I go, something always calls me back.

This past April, that pull felt especially meaningful. This time, I wasn’t returning alone or with friends: I brought my husband, our toddler, and my mother along for the journey. We followed Peru’s classic circuit — Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and Cusco — a route I know well. And still, Peru found new ways to surprise me.

A Destination That Always Feels New

Even when the itinerary is familiar, Peru never feels repetitive. The light hits the Andes differently each time. The Sacred Valley’s patchwork of fields still stops me in my tracks. Machu Picchu, no matter how many times you’ve seen it, remains quietly, profoundly breathtaking.

What changes most, though, is how you experience the country. Traveling with family slowed us down in the best way. We lingered over meals, took in viewpoints at a gentler pace, and noticed small moments I might have rushed past before: a smile from a hotel staff member toward my son, a quiet village morning, and the rhythm of daily life continuing alongside centuries of history.

Food, Warmth, and Deep-Rooted Hospitality

Peru’s food scene alone is reason enough to return. From beautifully prepared coastal dishes in Lima to hearty Andean flavors in Cusco, every meal felt thoughtful and deeply connected to place. Sharing that with my family, watching my toddler try new flavors, enjoying long lunches together, all made it even more special.

But beyond the landscapes and cuisine, it’s the people that linger with me. Peru has a way of welcoming you back, whether it’s your first visit or your tenth. There’s a warmth and generosity that makes you feel not just like a visitor, but like someone who belongs, even briefly.

Why Peru Is Perfect for Multi-Generational Travel

This trip reminded me why Peru works so beautifully for families and multi-generational travelers. The infrastructure is strong, the experiences are varied, and the journey can be tailored. Whether you want cultural immersion, soft adventure, incredible food, or simply time together somewhere extraordinary, Peru has what you’re seeking.

For me, returning to Peru with my husband, my mother, and my child felt like closing a circle. It was a chance to share a place that shaped me with the people I love most, and to see it through fresh eyes.
