Temples, History & Tailor-Made Travel to Cambodia

Cambodia’s single greatest draw is also one of the most impressive archaeological sites on earth: the temple complex at Angkor, built by the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 15th centuries. But Cambodia offers more than Angkor: Phnom Penh with its markets, history, and French colonial cuisine, the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers for cruising and riverside villages, and the southern coast for remote beaches and private white-sand islands.

Every Cambodia itinerary is designed around your interests and pace. Our specialists have traveled Cambodia firsthand and know how to create a trip that does it justice. Browse the suggested trips below and contact a Vaya specialist to start planning your Cambodia journey.

  • Battambang — A quieter colonial city in the northwest with one of Cambodia’s best art scenes, authentic cuisine, and easy access to smaller, less-visited temple sites

Frequently Asked Questions: Cambodia Travel & Tours

The temples of Angkor are the undisputed centerpiece. Angkor Wat itself warrants multiple visits at different times of day, and Bayon and Ta Prohm each deserve several hours. Beyond Angkor, Phnom Penh’s National Museum holds the finest collection of Khmer sculpture in the world, and the riverfront Silver Pagoda is worth an afternoon. A boat trip on the Tonlé Sap lake offers a close look at floating village life that has little equivalent elsewhere in Southeast Asia. For travelers with more time, Battambang’s art scene and colonial architecture are worth an overnight, and the southern coast around Kep and Kampot offers pepper farms, a celebrated crab market, and a pace of life entirely different from Siem Reap.

November through April is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit, with lower humidity and little rain. The cooler months of November through February are the most pleasant for temple exploration, though December and January bring peak crowds to Angkor. The wet season runs from May through October; while humidity and afternoon showers are common, the landscape is greener and the crowds thinner. The Tonlé Sap lake is at its largest and most impressive between September and November, when it expands to several times its dry-season size.

That depends on how much of the country you want to cover. A focused trip centered on Siem Reap and Phnom Penh can be done comfortably in one week, while adding the southern coast, Battambang, or a Mekong river cruise will extend things. Most travelers combine Cambodia with Vietnam, Laos, or Thailand, which shapes the overall length more than Cambodia alone does. A Vaya specialist can help you figure out the right balance based on your pace and priorities.

Yes. Siem Reap has several strong luxury properties set in tropical gardens near the temples, and Phnom Penh’s best hotels are well-positioned with 5-star facilities. Private guides at Angkor make a significant difference — the ability to time visits to specific temples around the crowds and light conditions is something group tours generally cannot offer. Cambodia’s luxury infrastructure has improved substantially over the past decade, particularly in Siem Reap, and a well-planned private itinerary can feel very different from the standard tourist trail.

Temple exploration involves a moderate amount of walking on uneven stone surfaces, often in heat and humidity. Angkor Wat’s central tower involves a steep climb; many travelers opt to admire it from ground level. The outer temples require more walking between sites. The rest of a typical Cambodia itinerary is relatively gentle — city tours, boat trips, and market visits. Active options exist but are not the main draw: cycling between temples is popular in Siem Reap, and hiking is available in the Cardamom Mountains.

Cambodia pairs naturally with Vietnam, Laos, or a Mekong river cruise connecting all three. A two-country Vietnam and Cambodia itinerary is one of the most popular combinations in Southeast Asia. Adding Laos and a Mekong cruise extends the trip further. Thailand also works as a companion destination. Cambodia can also be combined with Myanmar.

The scale and completeness of Angkor sets Cambodia apart from every other destination in the region. No other site in Southeast Asia combines the architectural ambition, the historical depth, and the jungle setting in the same way. Cambodia is also one of the few places where guides bring a personal connection to the country’s story that no amount of reading can replicate. That combination of ancient civilization and the warmth of the people who live among its remains is what most travelers find stays with them longest.
