April, May, September, and October are the strongest months across most of the country. Summers are hot — Andalucía and Madrid regularly exceed 100°F in July and August, making afternoon sightseeing uncomfortable. The north, including the Basque Country and Galicia, stays milder in summer and is a good option if you prefer cooler temperatures. For the Camino de Santiago, May, June, and September offer the best balance of weather and manageable trail traffic. July and August bring peak visitor numbers.

The Camino de Santiago has several routes, and the right one depends on your pace, fitness level, and how much time you have. The Camino Portugués, which runs north through Portugal and into Galicia, is one of the most popular options for travelers who want a well-supported, scenic route. Most pilgrims focus on completing the final 100km from Vigo to Santiago de Compostela, which qualifies for the official Compostela certificate. The daily walking distance, accommodation style, and pace can all be tailored — from comfortable paradores and boutique hotels to self-guided vs. privately guided options. Along the way there is plenty of opportunity to incorporate wine tastings in the Rías Baixas, fresh seafood stops on the Galician coast, and cultural or historic tours at key points on the route.
