Adventure Options
A journey to Antarctica is an adventure in and of itself, but for travelers who want to push it even further, many cruises offer optional active excursions at additional cost. Options include kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding (always wearing a dry suit), mountaineering (trekking up nearby small mountains), and camping in the snow (usually not the best night’s sleep since it never gets dark!). If you are interested in any of the options below, please let us know as early as you can in the booking process so we can get you signed up. Many of these activities sell out way in advance of the cruise dates. Below are some of the adventure options that some vessels offer. Please inquire for a complete list of adventure options when you speak to us.
For the ultimate Antarctica Adventure, a one night stay on the peninsula can be booked. This allows you a unique and personal expedition. Camping is not available on all voyages and is generally offered on early season voyages. For camping adventures you need to have adequate clothing and be well fed prior to the adventure as no meals are served on land. All equipment and instruction is provided for camping adventures and a release of liability form is required prior to the excursion.
Sea Kayaking is a great way to experience Antarctica as you glide across a tranquil bay to be in the presence of icebergs and glaciers. Normally a sea kayak adventure is done several times per voyage, each time with a small group of adventurers. Sea Kayaking days are scheduled to make the best of calm weather conditions. It is recommended that someone who takes this option has had prior kayaking experience, including the ability to perform a wet exit. If you have not had prior kayaking experience, a course that provides a minimum of three kayaking hours is recommended prior to your Antarctica expedition.
Similar to sea Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding is a great way to experience Antarctica as you surf across a tranquil bay to be in the presence of icebergs and glaciers. This unique perspective of Antarctica is surely one that will not be forgotten. Normally a stand-up paddleboarding adventure is done with a small group of adventurers and most outings are accompanied by a nearby Zodiac. Stand-up paddleboarding days are scheduled to make the best of calm weather conditions. While advance sign-up is required, sometimes a spot can be found with onboard sign-up.
