Day 1:

Welcome to Japan!

Zen monk in Kyoto

Arrive in Kyoto. Steeped in history, Kyoto is a city that seems to effortlessly exude timeless charm. With iconic temples, traditional tea houses, talented craftspeople, and picturesque gardens, Kyoto offers a glimpse into Japan’s rich heritage. With so much to see and do here, make sure you discuss your specific interests with your travel designer so your time here can be carefully curated.

Accommodations: Hotel Kanra Kyoto, 3 nights

Located a 12 minute walk from Kyoto Station, Hotel Kanra Kyoto is a lovely hotel outside of the hustle and bustle of central Kyoto. The decor is a modern Machiya style, built with natural materials such as wood, stone, and iron, and crafted with traditional skills and techniques from Kyoto. The 68 rooms and suites are in a Japanese and Western style and include all modern necessities. Beds range in size from full to extra wide king beds, and some rooms and suites have a spacious outdoor bath made of cypress set in a Japanese garden on a terrace. Unwind in the cedar soaking tubs, dine at the restaurant featuring items from wagyu steak to wood-fired pizza, or relax in the spa.

Day 2:

Fushimi Inari and Beyond

Start your day at Fushimi Inari. Fushimi Inari, a shrine dedicated to the Shinto god of rice and prosperity, is renowned for its thousands of iconic vermilion torii gates that form a mesmerizing pathway leading through the wooded forest of the sacred Mount Inari. Pass by smaller shrines, lakes, and fox statues as you ascend to the top of the mountain. Descend by way of a different path, arriving at Tofukuji Temple, one of the principal Zen temples in Kyoto.

In the afternoon, a tea master will guide you through a traditional tea ceremony. Learn about this ancient artform and its pertaining rituals.

Day 3:

Mystical Arashiyama & Traditional Kyoto

Arashiyama bamboo grove

Set out for Arashiyama, a serene area of Kyoto renowned for its natural beauty. Begin your tour by wandering through an enchanting bamboo forest before arriving at the tranquil Tenryu-Ji Temple. Tenryu-Ji is considered one of the five great temples of Kyoto. Your guide will walk you through the grounds and explain its Zen Buddhist philosophy. Afterwards, sit down to a vegetarian Buddhist-influenced shojin-ryoji lunch.

After lunch, tour the 17th century Nijo Castle before taking a stroll through the Gion district. Gion is known for its narrow streets lined with traditional wooden homes, dangling paper lanterns, and the occasional geisha sighting as they make their way to their next appointment.

Day 4:

Embark on the Naksendo: Magome to Tsumago

Journey to the Kiso Valley and the start of the Nakasendo Trail. The trail was once the only route between these Tokyo and Kyoto, so as you hike, you’ll follow in the steps of samurai and emperors. The hike begins in the post Juku town of Magome, and journeys through the forest along ancient cobblestoned paths, ascending to Magome Pass. Remember to turn back for breathtaking mountain views before reaching the charming Tateba tea house with its weeping cherry tree.

After conquering the Magome-toge Pass, enjoy a downhill section all the way to Tsumago. Lush forests provide cool shade, bridges carry you over gurgling creeks, and the serene Odaki-Medaki waterfalls offer a moment of tranquility.

Arrive in Tsumago. Tsumago-juku is one of the best-preserved post towns in Japan, and is filled with wooden lattice houses, shops, museums, and ryokan inns, transporting you back to the age of samurai.

Distance: 9km, 3-4hrs

Accommodations: Fujioto Ryokan

This traditional Japanese ryokan is an ideal accommodation for people wanting to experience true Japanese traditions and culture, and is considered to be one of the top ryokans in Japan. Located in Tsumago, its surrounded by manicured Japanese gardens, and evokes an old-world feeling. The onsite restaurant follows recipes that were used back in the samurai era, and the rooms - while in traditional Japanese style - offer modern amenities such as WiFi, air-conditioning, and luxe toiletries. Guests can unwind in the Hinoki bath, or take a stroll through the gardens.

Day 5:

Naksendo Trail: Tsumago to Kiso-Fuskushima

Nakasendo Trail

The longest day on the trail offers scenic and varied terrain. From Tsumago, the trail travels through small valleys and past forests of bamboo and Japanese cedar before arriving at the picturesque town of Nagiso. Built in the 1920s, the wooden Momosuke bridge offers a glimpse into history, while local shops provide the perfect opportunity to stock up on snacks and drinks for the journey ahead.

The next part of the trail offers a gentle ascent as you traverse forests and farmland. You might even find yourself passing through the backyards of friendly locals tending to their crops – a unique glimpse into everyday life in the Japanese countryside.

Finally, arrive at Nenoue Pass and enjoy a rewarding downhill stretch until you reach the charming town of Nojiri. From here, a quick 30-minute train ride whisks you away to Kiso-Fukushima, a historic post town that once flourished as a political and economic center in the Kiso Valley. Tonight, enjoy kaiseki-style cuisine and hot spring baths.

Distance: 18km, 6 hrs

Accommodations: Nukumorino-yado Komanoyu

This historic ryokan was founded in 1897 and is nestled in the heart of the Kiso Mountains. Known for its warm hospitality and intimate, family-owned feel, this hotel also features its own hot springs and indoor and outdoor soaking onsens. The onsite restaurant is known for its comforting, local cuisine, and other hotel features include a relaxing library, courtyard and gardens surrounded by trees, a free starry-night tour (the area is known for its famously clear skies), an art gallery, and Japanese-style guest rooms.

Day 6:

Nakasendo Trail: Kiso-Fukushima to Matsumoto

Nakasendo post town

Take a local train to Yabuhara and the start of today’s hike. Pass shrines and temples along the route, and hike over Torii Pass, home to a shrine and breathtaking views of the valley. Finally, arrive in the village of Narai. Narai’s main street is made up nearly entirely of Japanese post town houses, many of which have been converted into coffee shops, restaurants, or craft stores. Stop to marvel at the Kiso Bridge, one of Japan’s widest wooden bridges and built from ancient cypress trees. This area is also famous for its wooden lacquerware. Have time to explore the village before transferring to your overnight accommodation in the castle town of Matsumoto.

Distance: 6km, 3 hrs

Accommodations: BYAKU Narai

BYAKU Narai is a traditional inn located in a centuries-old building, and still honors old Japanese traditions and design. Located in Narai, this inn is a lovely accommodation to escape the bustle, and is surrounded by sculpted gardens and trees. The onsite onsen is an ideal place to relax and soak in steaming mountain spring waters, and the restaurant offers a traditional menu created by one of Japan's top chefs (including sake pairings). The 16 guest rooms are located throughout antique buildings and celebrate the original designs, all while including modern amenities such as mini-fridges, WiFi, coffee machines, and air-conditioning.

Day 7:

Naksendo Trail: Matsumoto

Matsumoto Castle

Rise for a day of sightseeing in Matsumoto. Visit Matsumoto Castle, with its striking black exterior, which is a stunning sight against the Japanese Alps. You’ll also visit a miso brewery that has been in operation since 1868. The brewery still practices the traditional methods of producing miso, which involves keeping it in wooden barrels and aging for three years. In the afternoon, take the train to Karuizawa and settle into a local ryokan.

Accommodations: Tsuruya Ryokan

Located in the city center of Karuizawa-machi, Tsuruya Ryokan boasts nine Japanese-style guest rooms across three connected buildings. Each room is adorned with charming antique finishings, creating a homely, warm atmosphere. This family-friendly ryokan has features such as a public onsen with mineral-rich water, in-room massages, and an onsite restaurant serving traditional Japanese cuisine.

Day 8:

Nakasendo Trail: Karuizawa to Yokokawa. Onward to Tokyo

The final hike on our Nakasendo trip travels over the Usui-Toge Pass, before gently descending to the town of Yokokawa. Admire the rugged beauty of Usui Pass, the serene shrines, and the old railway town of Yokokawa. On arrival in Yokokawa, begin the journey to Tokyo where you’ll arrive late afternoon.

Distance: 16km, 5 hrs

Park Hotel Tokyo is located on the 25th floor and up in the Shiodome Media Tower. Day 9:

Tokyo Exploration

Tokyo has something for everyone; world-class restaurants, exquisite gardens, contemporary architecture, quaint backstreets, and a dazzling cityscape. Beyond the bustling lights, the city reveals tranquil neighborhoods with locals immersed in daily life and numerous hidden gems in the form of charming, undiscovered shops and restaurants.

On today’s tour, we visit the Meiji Shrine, the vibrant Harajuku fashion district, and sample local delicacies in depachika food halls as we work our way through the different neighborhoods.

Farewell to Japan
