This 18-day itinerary begins in Bangkok before heading north to Nan, a province of Lanna temples, Bronze Age archaeological sites, and mountain landscapes. From there, the route continues through the lakeside town of Phayao to Chiang Mai, with days spent in H'mong villages, highland royal projects, and a 150-year-old family home in the countryside. The journey south passes through Lampang, Sukhothai, and Ayutthaya - three cities that together trace the arc of Thai history from its earliest kingdoms - before a flight to Khao Sok National Park, where two nights on the water among limestone karst formations provide a dramatic change of scenery. The itinerary closes with two days at leisure on the beaches and in the jungles of Khao Lak.

Day 3: Fly North to Nan

After a transfer to the airport, you’ll fly north to Nan, a province in the far northeast of Thailand that sees a fraction of the visitors that neighboring Chiang Mai attracts. Bordered by Laos to the north and east, Nan’s temples reflect a blend of Lanna, Burmese, and Thai Lue influences found nowhere else in Thailand, and its valleys, national parks, and highland villages remain largely off the international tourist circuit.

After a 20-minute transfer from the airport to your hotel, the evening is reserved for a private Royal Dinner Experience featuring a curated selection of traditional northern Thai dishes.

Accommodations: Nan Seasons Boutique Resort

A small lodge set among rice fields and mountains in the historical city of Wiang Phu Phiang in Nan Province, northern Thailand, Nan Seasons Boutique Resort has teak bungalows and villas designed in traditional Lanna Thai style. The open-air restaurant serves Thai and fusion cuisine alongside wines and signature cocktails, with views over the gardens. Other facilities include a swimming pool and a sunset viewpoint with hammocks and seating among the rice fields.

Day 4: Nan Countryside, Cuisine, History, and Culture

The day begins at the Nan Identity Museum for an introduction to the region’s history and traditions before continuing to a traditional dragon boat factory. At the Bo Suak archaeological site, pottery excavations dating back more than 3,000 years to the Bronze Age offer a glimpse into how long this valley has been settled.

Lunch is at a rice farmer’s home in the countryside, where the hosts prepare an organic farm-to-table meal using ingredients grown on their land, with rice fields and mountain views on all sides. The afternoon takes you to a traditional weaving factory where textile techniques passed down through generations are still in daily practice, before the day closes with a visit to Wat Phu Khao Noi for panoramic views over Nan city. From there you’ll transfer to your accommodation for the evening.

The afternoon moves through Doi Phu Kha National Park, with a stop at the 5,625-foot viewpoint over forested peaks, a visit to the Chao Pho Phu Kha Shrine — an important spiritual site dedicated to the King of Pua — and a close look at the rare Phu Kha tree, a pink-flowering species found only in this part of the world. The day ends at Cocoa Valley, a local chocolate shop built around Nan’s small but growing cacao industry, before the drive back to town.

Accommodations: Visama Explorer Nan, 2 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 8: H'mong Culture and Villages

Head out of Chiang Mai to Ban Mae Sa Mai, the largest H’mong community in northern Thailand. The morning begins with a visit to a small local museum covering H’mong heritage and a taste of traditional snacks before setting out on a one to two hour guided trek with a H’mong guide through the surrounding hills and down into the Mae Sa Valley. The afternoon takes you to the Nong Hoi Royal Project in the nearby H’mong village of Nong Hai, an agricultural research center established in 1986 that focuses on temperate crops – plums, grapes, strawberries, Cape gooseberries, and herbs – as part of a broader effort to develop sustainable livelihoods in highland communities. A walk through the village rounds out the day before the drive back to Chiang Mai.

Day 9: Chiang Mai Traditions, Cuisine, and Temples

Head south of Chiang Mai to the village of Bandoo in Hangdong to spend the morning with the Raunkaew-Yanon family, who have lived in their traditional Lanna home for nearly 150 years. Have a tour on their farm and enjoy a northern Thai meal alongside your hosts.

The afternoon moves to Doi Suthep mountain and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, one of northern Thailand’s most revered temples. You can climb the 308-step Naga serpent staircase or take the cable car to the top, where golden pagodas, active shrines, and wide views over Chiang Mai await. On the way back down, a stop at Wat Pha Lat – a forest temple set into the hillside above the city – offers a calm end to the afternoon.

Accommodations: Raya Heritage, 3 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 10: Chiang Mai to Sukhothai

The drive south to Sukhothai includes a stop in the Chae Hom District for a choice between two very different experiences: a visit to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center, one of Thailand’s most respected elephant welfare organizations, or a 4WD drive and short hike up to Wat Chalermprakiat, a hidden temple of white pagodas perched on rocky cliffs with sweeping views over the surrounding mountains.

From there, the route continues to Lampang, a town known for its well-preserved Lanna architecture and horse-drawn carriages that still serve as local transport. A stop for lunch takes in some of the old town’s character before the drive continues south to Sukhothai, the capital of the first Kingdom of Siam and one of Thailand’s most historically significant cities. If time allows, a detour to Si Satchanalai Historical Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that predates and rivals Sukhothai in scale — is worth making before arriving at the hotel.

The route passes a wood furniture factory and meanders along rural irrigation canals before arriving at the Eastern Gate of Sukhothai Historical Park. Inside, you’ll explore Wat Chang Lom, Wat Si Chum, and Wat Mahathat — some of the finest surviving examples of 13th and 14th-century Thai Buddhist and Hindu architecture from the kingdom’s golden era. After lunch at a local restaurant, the cycling route continues into the park’s southern zone.

Ayutthaya served as the capital of the Thai kingdom for over 400 years before its destruction by the Burmese in 1767, and the scale of what remains is striking. The tour covers Wat Mahathat, where a stone Buddha head sits famously entwined in the roots of a banyan tree; Wat Ratchaburana, where steep stairs inside the prang reward the climb with wide views over the ruins; Wat Phra Si Sanphet, originally built as a royal residence before becoming a monastery; Wat Lokkayasutha and its enormous reclining Buddha; and Wat Chai Wattanaram, a grand Khmer-style complex of chedis on the riverside that is best seen in the late afternoon light.
