Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi

Welcome to Vietnam! Upon arrival at Noi Bai Airport, you’ll be assisted through visa procedures before your guide and driver transfer you to your hotel in Hanoi, where the rest of the day is yours to unwind and settle in at your leisure.

Accommodations: The Oriental Jade Hotel, 2 nights

Located on Hang Trong Street, in the heart of the bustling Old Quarter, you'll be steps away from Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi Cathedral, and local markets. Choose from rooms and suites offering classic decor, modern furnishings, and stunning city views. Unwind by the rooftop pool or at the on-site spa. For dining options, Thang Long Signature restaurant offers a wide range of Vietnamese and Western cuisine that promises to impress your taste buds at the first bite. Guests can also chill out at the O'Sky Bar, taking a sip of signature cocktails while enjoying a mesmerizing view of the lake.

Day 2: Hanoi Like a Local

Enjoy a full day to explore Hanoi with your private local guide. The morning begins at Hoan Kiem Lake, where locals gather early for tai chi and aerobics, before a visit to Ngoc Son Temple and a first taste of Hanoi’s coffee culture — either a traditional ca phe sua da or the city’s famous egg coffee.

From there you’ll walk through the Old Quarter’s French colonial streets before visiting Hoa Lo Prison, B-52 Lake, and the Temple of Literature, each offering a different angle on the city’s layered history. Lunch is a bowl of bun cha, Hanoi’s signature noodle dish. The afternoon takes you to the train street, a narrow residential lane where trains pass within feet of the front doors, before the day winds down with a cold beer at a local bia hoi corner.

Accommodations: The Oriental Jade Hotel, 2 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 3: Cycling the Red River Delta and Night Train to Sapa

This morning you’ll be driven by your private guide to the outskirts of the Red River Delta, where you’ll unload bikes and set off at a relaxed pace along back roads through farm fields and local villages toward Bat Trang, Hanoi’s historic pottery village. You’ll explore the central market, visit a small family workshop to see how pottery is made, and have the chance to throw your own piece before lunch at a nearby local restaurant.

In the afternoon, you’ll pick up the route again along the Red River, cycling through rice fields and residential areas to But Thap Pagoda, a 13th-century temple complex on the riverbank. From there, the route continues — by bike or car depending on pace and preference — to Dong Ho Village, known for its traditional woodblock folk paintings, one of Vietnam’s oldest and most distinctive art forms.

Back in Hanoi in the evening, you’ll board the Chapa Express overnight train heading north toward Sapa, arriving the following morning.

Accommodations: Chapa Express

Chapa Express is a boutique overnight train service operating between Hanoi and several destinations across Vietnam, including Lao Cai (Sapa), Hue, and Da Nang. Cabins are well-appointed, each with an ensuite bathroom and modern amenities to ensure a comfortable overnight journey, including air-conditioning and Wi-Fi, and complimentary snacks, tea, coffee, and juice. A VIP lounge is available at Hanoi Railway Station for passengers prior to departure.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4: Sapa Hiking and H'mong Villages

You’ll arrive at Lao Cai station in the morning and meet your guide for the transfer to Sapa for breakfast. From there, a short drive brings you to Hang Da, a Black H’mong village on the edge of the Muong Hoa Valley, with views up to Mount Fansipan — at 10,312 feet, the highest peak in Indochina.

The 4.5 mile hike begins here, following a gentle downhill path through the valley of Sa Seng, passing through a series of H’mong hamlets along the way. The villages are a mix of wooden houses ringed by stone walls, with livestock roaming freely and, if timing is right, women working hemp fiber into thread for traditional clothing. The trail continues to Sa Pa hamlet at the bottom of the valley, where a car will be waiting for the transfer to your hotel.

Accommodations: Topas Ecolodge, 2 nights

Ranked among the Top 3 Best Resorts in Asia by Condé Nast Traveler in 2025, Topas Ecolodge is a 50-bungalow mountain retreat set on a hilltop inside Hoang Lien National Park, 45 minutes from Sapa in northern Vietnam. Bungalows are built from local white granite in a Scandinavian minimalist style, with views over the surrounding rice terraces and mountain valleys. The lodge has two restaurants led by a Danish head chef, serving Vietnamese and Western cuisine, plus a bar. Other facilities include two mountain infinity pools, a spa, and a café.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 5: Hoang Lien Hike and Sapa Culture

Today you’ll head deeper into Hoang Lien National Park for a day hike well away from the more visited trails around Sapa town. Your hike begins near Sin Chai village and moves through high mountain terrain with views over deep valleys, waterfalls, and terraced hillsides before dropping into Nam Nhiu, a Red Dao village where you’ll visit local homes and learn about daily life in one of the park’s most remote farming communities.

From Nam Nhiu, a narrow dirt trail leads through bamboo groves and past the simple harvest huts that farmers use during the growing season, crossing rice terraces and a river before arriving at Nam Cang village for lunch at a local home. Nam Cang sits at the far end of the Sapa valley and is known for the Red Dao women’s distinctive embroidered clothing, as well as local traditions of herbal bathing, natural medicine, paper-making, and silver jewelry. You’ll spend time in the village exploring these crafts before meeting your vehicle for the return to Sapa.

Accommodations: Topas Ecolodge, 2 nights

*Includes: Breakfast

Day 6: Sapa Villages Walk and Travel to Mu Cang Chai

The morning begins with a gentle two-hour, four-mile walk through the Muong Hoa Valley, the largest rice terrace area around Sapa. Your guide will walk you through the full cycle of rice production as you descend through the terraces from Lao Chai, a Black H’mong village, to Ta Van, home to the Giay minority; the only place in the Sapa area where this group can be met. Between May and October, the valley is alive with planting or harvest activity; outside these months, the terraces are no less impressive. A visit to the local school in Ta Van rounds out the walk before the transfer back to Sapa.

In the afternoon, you’ll set out on the roughly 4.5 hour drive south to Mu Cang Chai, arriving in the evening to settle in and take in the surroundings.

Accommodations: Garrya Mu Cang Chai, 2 nights

Certified as the world's largest bamboo lodge, Garrya Mu Cang Chai is an award-winning resort set among the UNESCO-recognized terraced rice fields of the Mu Cang Chai District in northern Vietnam. The resort features elevated, well-appointed rooms and suites with views over the mountains and terraces. Facilities include an infinity pool, an impressive spa area with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms, a movie theater, a well-equipped gym, and several restaurants, bars, and lounge areas.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 7: Rice Terraces and Culture of Mu Cang Chai

After breakfast you’ll drive to La Pan Tan, widely regarded as the finest terraced field landscape in the Mu Cang Chai area. Set out on a walk that follows winding hillside paths through some of the most dramatic agricultural scenery in northern Vietnam, with sweeping views over stacked rice terraces that shift in color depending on the season.

After around two and a half hours on foot, the route reaches the iconic circular terraced field that has become the defining image of Mu Cang Chai: a broad, bowl-shaped formation set against the surrounding mountains. Your car will meet you here and continue a further four miles along the valley road, where terraces line both sides, before stopping in town for lunch at a local restaurant before returning to the lodge for the rest of the day.

Accommodations: Garrya Mu Cang Chai, 2 nights

*Includes: Breakfast

Day 8: H'Mong Culture and Return to Hanoi

Turtle Tower in Hanoi Hoan Kiem foggy lake in Vietnam

The morning begins with an ambling four-mile walk from the small H’mong village of Pung Luong, following narrow trails through terraced fields and into the forest. The route passes through orchid-dotted woodland before arriving at a cluster of H’mong villages where daily life continues largely as it has for generations. Leaving the villages behind, the trail opens onto a sweeping valley of terraced fields before returning to town for lunch and a chance to freshen up at the hotel.

In the afternoon, you’ll transfer back to Hanoi for an overnight stay.

Accommodations: The Oriental Jade Hotel

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 9: Fly to Phong Nha

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight south to Phong Nha. In the afternoon, you’ll head out by bike with your guide to explore Bong Lai Valley, a quiet rural valley of rice paddies, small farms, and villages set against a backdrop of karst mountains. The route follows dirt roads at an easy pace, with plenty of opportunity to stop and observe daily life in one of the region’s most unspoiled countryside settings.

Accommodations: Phong Nha Lakehouse

Set on the shores of Dong Suon Lake, Phong Nha Lakehouse is a small eco-resort near the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park. Rooms and bungalows have lake and mountain views, some with private balconies and outdoor showers. The resort has a restaurant and cafe, a swimming pool, and access to the freshwater lake for swimming, kayaking, and fishing.

*Includes: Breakfast

Day 10: Hang Tien Cave and Tan Hoa Village

You’ll be collected in the morning and driven to Tan Hoa for another hike through the Vietnamese countryside. The hike begins with a short uphill climb before descending into a river valley, where the path crosses a dry rocky riverbed to reach the entrance of Hang Tien 1 Cave. Inside, the cave opens into a series of chambers decorated with green calcite formations, striped limestone walls, and a soaring central dome with calcite layers that resemble miniature terraced fields. After exploring the cave, lunch is served at the entrance before the route continues to a hidden natural pool in the mountain for a swim.

The afternoon walk brings you back to Tan Hoa, where you’ll check into your mountainside hotel before dinner at a local home.

Accommodations: Tu Lan Lodge

Tu Lan Lodge is a 30-room property overlooking Phong Nha karst mountains and valleys. Rooms range from mountainside bungalows to floating river rooms that rise with the water levels. The open-air restaurant serves local Vietnamese cuisine and is considered one of the most scenic in the area, with indoor and outdoor lounge spaces offering views over the valley, village, and surrounding mountains.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11: Tu Lan Caves

After breakfast, you’ll set out on foot through cornfields and meadows to the Rào Nan River, crossing it before a short steep climb to the entrance of Rat Cave. Despite its modest 1,000-foot length, the cave is densely packed with stalactites and distinctive heart-shaped arch formations. After exploring, the route crosses back over the river and climbs Baby Hill — a 200-foot ascent — before descending into Hung Ton Valley and the dry entrance of Hung Ton Cave, where fossils of marine mollusks embedded in the walls reveal the ancient origins of the Tu Lan cave system.

The more technical section follows: harnessed and helmeted, you’ll scale a ladder more than 30 feet high before navigating an underground river passage by headlamp. Lunch is served beside Tổ Mộ Lake before the trail winds back through fields to Tan Hoa, from where you’ll be transferred back to Phong Nha

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 12: Ho Chi Minh City Culture, History, and Cuisine

After breakfast, you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight south to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, your guide will meet you for a half-day tour of the city’s most significant landmarks: the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, the colonial-era Central Post Office, and the War Remnants Museum, which documents the American War from the Vietnamese perspective.

The city itself is worth taking in between stops: a dense, fast-moving mix of French colonial architecture, Chinese pagodas, street markets, and modern towers that gives Ho Chi Minh City its distinct energy.

Accommodations: Bach Suites Saigon, 2 nights

Bach Suites Saigon is a boutique hotel set beside Turtle Lake in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, designed by architect Felice Iacobellis with French colonial architecture. The name "Bạch" means "white" in Vietnamese, and white marble is used throughout the interiors to capture and amplify natural light. Today you’ll transfer an hour and a half south to the Mekong Delta, starting the day with coffee at a local café while your bike is fitted. The cycling route follows narrow roads through rice paddies and country lanes shaded by mature trees, covering between 15 and 25 miles depending on pace and preference. After the morning ride, you’ll board a private boat for a cruise along the river to a lunch spot serving traditional Mekong cuisine. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon on the water before the transfer back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving in the early evening.
