Days: 9 | Contact us for pricing

  • Includes accommodation at best-in-class hotels and lodges
  • A range of unique, optional safari activities included at each lodge

This Botswana itinerary is built around two of the Okavango's most celebrated private reserves. Beginning at Jao Camp in the Okavango Delta, the itinerary then moves to Zarafa Camp in the private Selinda Reserve, overlooking the Zibadianja Lagoon. Between game drives, mokoro excursions, boat safaris, and guided walks, the activities are entirely up to you. The midpoint helicopter flight to Tsodilo Hills, with its 4,500 San rock paintings and 100,000 years of human history, adds a cultural dimension that few Botswana itineraries include. Throughout, the standard of accommodation, guiding, and cuisine reflects the very best the country has to offer.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: Overnight in Johannesburg

Welcome to Africa! You will be met on arrival at O.R. Tambo International Airport and escorted to the InterContinental Johannesburg O.R. Tambo, located steps away from the terminal and making it a convenient overnight spot before catching your morning flight to Botswana.

Day 2: Johannesburg to the Okavango Delta

This morning you will head back to the terminal for your flight north to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. On arrival, a dedicated representative will meet you and handle the check-in process for your onward bush flight, leaving you free to simply enjoy the ride.

Touching down in the heart of the Delta, your guide will be waiting to welcome you to Jao Camp, widely regarded as the most refined and exclusive retreat in the Okavango. After settling in and sitting down to lunch, you will head out into the private concession for your first game drive.

Accommodations: Jao Camp, 3 nights

Set on a private island in the heart of Botswana's Okavango Delta, Jao Camp is the flagship property of the Jao Reserve and is fully solar-powered. The camp has five suites and two ultra-luxe private villas, each with its own private plunge pool, lounge and dining areas, and indoor and outdoor showers. The two villas also come with a dedicated private chef, butler, guide, and vehicle, as well as a private fire pit. Communal facilities include a swimming pool, a spa, a gym, a library, a wine cellar, and a boma. Activities include game drives, guided walking safaris, mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, boat safaris, birdwatching among over 450 recorded species, seasonal catch-and-release fishing, and scenic helicopter flights.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Days 3-4: Discover the Okavango Delta

Enjoy two full days to explore one of the Okavango’s most biodiverse private concessions, choosing from a variety of activities on offer. Game drives venture out into the floodplains and dry islands in search of lion, leopard, elephant, and more, while mokoro excursions offer a water-level perspective on the Delta.

Other options include motorized boat safaris, seasonal catch-and-release fishing, and guided walks with expert trackers. Back at camp, the spa offers treatments in a setting surrounded by the sounds of the bush, or you can simply unwind beside your private plunge pool.

Accommodations: Jao Camp, 3 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5: Fly to the Selinda Reserve

After a final morning with your guide and a last breakfast at Jao, you will head to the airstrip for your bush flight into a completely different corner of northern Botswana.

Your next destination is located on the edge of Zibadianja Lagoon deep within the private 321,000-acre Selinda Reserve. After settling in over a leisurely lunch, you will head out into the reserve for your first afternoon game drive in this new landscape.

Accommodations: Zarafa Camp, 4 nights

A Relais & Châteaux property set on the private Selinda Reserve in northern Botswana, Zarafa Camp overlooks the Zibadianja Lagoon. The four tented suites each measure over 1,076 sq. ft. under canvas, with claw-foot copper bathtubs, a gas fireplace, private plunge pools, and wraparound decks. Built from recycled hardwoods and canvas and powered by an on-site solar farm, the camp has an open-air gym, a firepit, a spa, a wine cellar, and indoor and outdoor dining and lounge areas.

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: Safari in the Selinda Reserve

Today is your first full day to explore the Selinda Reserve. Opt to set out on game drives that venture deep into the private concession in search of the reserve’s resident lion prides, leopard, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, and African wild dogs. Night drives are also on offer, opening up a different side of the bush and an opportunity to look for nocturnal creatures.

For a change of pace, guided walking safaris bring you into direct contact with the landscape, while boat safaris along the Zibadianja Lagoon offer close-up sightings of hippos, crocodiles, and an exceptional variety of waterbirds. Each guest is provided with a professional-grade Canon camera and Swarovski binoculars for the duration of their stay. The guides are well-versed in wildlife photography and will help you make the most of them.

Accommodations: Zarafa Camp, 4 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: The Tsodilo Hills by Helicopter

This morning, instead of a game drive, you will board a private helicopter for a flight to Tsodilo Hills — a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the remote northwest of Botswana. The hills are home to more than 4,500 rock paintings, some estimated to be 26,000 years old, with evidence of human activity in the caves stretching back around 100,000 years.

On arrival, a private rock art expert will guide you through the site on foot, bringing the history and significance of the San Bushman paintings to life. After a picnic lunch in this remarkable setting, you will board the helicopter for the return scenic flight across the Okavango Panhandle, over permanent lagoons and seasonal floodplains.

You’ll arrive back in camp in time for tea and an afternoon game drive.

Accommodations: Zarafa Camp, 4 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8: Safari in the Selinda Reserve

Today’s the final full day to make the most of the Selinda Reserve. Your guide will tailor the day around what you want to see and do — whether that means an early morning game drive in search of the reserve’s predators, a boat safari along the lagoon, a guided walk, or simply time on your private deck watching the wildlife come and go at the water’s edge.

Accommodations: Zarafa Camp, 4 nights

*Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9: Departure

After a final game drive and breakfast in the bush, you will head to the airstrip for your flight back to Maun, connecting onward to Johannesburg and home.

*Includes: Breakfast
