London is the obvious cornerstone of most U.K. itineraries, with the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tower of London, and Westminster, alongside excellent restaurants and the West End theater scene. Late spring and early autumn are great months to visit across most of the region. May, June, and September offer the best balance of mild weather, longer days, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season throughout, with higher prices and more visitors at popular sites. For Scotland specifically, May and September are particularly good: the Highlands are green and accessible without the summer crowds, and midges, which emerge in force from June onward, are less of a factor. The U.K. can be visited year-round, and winter has its own appeal in cities like London and Edinburgh.

The U.K. has excellent luxury infrastructure across all its destinations. London has some of the finest hotels in the world alongside Michelin-starred restaurants. Scotland has 5-star highland lodges, castle hotels, and some of the most characterful country house hotels in Europe. The Cotswolds has a strong collection of manor house hotels and traditional country inns that have been updated to a high standard. Northern Ireland has several standout properties along the Causeway Coast and in Belfast. As of January 2025, American travelers are required to obtain a U.K. Electronic Travel Authorization before traveling to the U.K. The ETA costs $21 USD and can be applied for online or via the UK ETA app. Once obtained, you can travel to the U.K. for three years before needing to reapply.
