Colombia Travel: History, Culture & Private Tailor-Made Adventures

Colombia spans five distinct ecosystems within a country roughly the size of Texas and California combined. The Andean highlands around Bogotá and Villa de Leyva give way south and west to the cloud-forested Coffee Region, where working haciendas grow cacao and some of the world’s most celebrated coffee. Cartagena anchors the Caribbean coast, its 16th-century walled city ringing some of the best-preserved colonial architecture in the Americas. Medellín sits in a valley an hour’s flight from Bogotá and tells one of the most remarkable urban success stories of the past two decades. Further out, the Llanos savannas near Yopal offer some of the best wildlife in South America, and the Amazon near Leticia adds a genuine edge-of-the-world remoteness.

Every Colombia itinerary we build is designed around your interests, pace, and style, using properties and guides chosen from firsthand experience. Browse the suggested trips below and contact a Vaya specialist to start planning your Colombia journey.

Regions at a glance:

  • Bogotá — A sprawling capital at 8,660 feet with a serious museum culture, excellent restaurants, and one of the great markets of South America
  • Coffee Region — Stay on working coffee and cacao estates, hike through the wax palm forests of the Cocora Valley, and visit colorful countryside towns
  • Cartagena — A UNESCO-listed coastal city with a historic walled center, Michelin-starred restaurants, restored colonial mansions, and proximity to the Rosario Islands
  • Medellín — Transformed over a single generation from its difficult past into a model of urban innovation, Medellín is adorned with street art, enticing day trips, and a thriving food scene
  • Villa de Leyva & the Boyacá Region — A perfectly preserved colonial town set in a high desert valley, surrounded by fossil beds, indigenous ceremonial sites, and some of Colombia’s best hiking

Frequently Asked Questions: Colombia

The strongest experiences cluster around three regions. In Bogotá, the Museo del Oro and the Botero Museum are each worth half a day, and the Paloquemao market is one of the great food and flower markets in South America. In the Coffee Region, the Cocora Valley hike through the wax palm forests is the standout activity, alongside visits to working coffee and cacao estates. In Cartagena, a guided walk through the walled city paired with a day trip to the Rosario Islands covers the history and the coast. Medellín’s cable-car metro and the murals of Comuna 13 are worth adding for anyone interested in one of the most remarkable urban reinvention stories in recent Latin American history.

Colombia’s climate is defined more by elevation than by season. Bogotá and the Coffee Region are cool year-round, with drier periods from December through March and June through August. Cartagena is hot year-round; its driest window runs December through April. The wettest months across most of the interior are April through May and October through November. Because a typical itinerary moves between the highlands and the coast, reasonable weather is achievable at almost any time of year. December and January are busy with domestic tourism in Cartagena and the Coffee Region, so begin planning early if traveling over the holidays.

Ten to thirteen days works well for Bogotá, the Coffee Region, and Cartagena. Nine days is workable but leaves little margin. Adding Medellín requires at least two more nights; Villa de Leyva can be folded into the Bogotá portion as a two-night addition. The Llanos and the Amazon are each viable two-to-three-night extensions for wildlife-focused travelers. For trips combining Colombia with Peru or the Galápagos, plan for at least twelve to fifteen days total.

Yes. The Coffee Region has working estate hotels with exceptional food and on-site cacao and coffee production. Cartagena’s best properties are restored colonial mansions with rooftop pools and acclaimed restaurants in the heart of the walled city. Bogotá has several strong luxury hotel options. Private guides, private transfers, and restaurant reservations at the top tables in each city are standard on a Vaya itinerary.

Most itineraries involve moderate daily walking on cobblestones and uneven terrain. Hikes can range from casual strolls to strenuous all-day challenges. Other active options include cycling through coffee country, raft trips on the Río La Vieja, and horseback riding. Bogotá sits at 8,660 feet; mild altitude symptoms are common on arrival but typically resolve within 24 hours.

The most popular combinations are Colombia with Peru and Colombia with Ecuador and the Galápagos, with Bogotá serving as a practical routing hub for both. Travelers adding the Galápagos typically spend five to seven nights in Colombia before or after a cruise. A Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru circuit is workable in three weeks. Colombia also pairs well with Costa Rica for travelers who want a nature-focused complement to Colombia’s urban and colonial highlights.
