Your private local guide will be waiting to take you to Ba Dinh Square, site of Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum and his nearby spartan wartime residence. Continue to the unique One Pillar Pagoda, then on to the Confucian academy known as the Temple of Literature, considered Vietnam’s first university.

Mekong River Cruise
Begin your day with a look at Laos’ most traditional Buddhist temple, Wat Xiengthong, before boarding your motor canoe for a two hour scenic cruise upstream on the Mekong River to visit the Pak Ou caves, set in a lime stone cliff opposite the mouth of the Mekong and Ou rivers. The sanctuaries at Pak Ou consist of two large caves, both repositories for thousands of Buddha images, which range from a mere centimeter to two meters in height. Along the river typical local villages are barely visible behind a screen of foliage. Slender canoes bobbing by the shore, bamboo poles and floats mark the location of nets and fish traps. Our first stop will be at Ban Muangkeo, a well-known village for Lao traditional rice whisky. After a simple lunch, return to Luang Prabang to visit the local weavers at Ock Pop Tok or stroll through the streets to enjoy the special historic architecture, shops and numerous cafes.
Alms-giving, Royal Palace and the Prabang
Walk with saffron-clad monks on their daily procession through the streets of Luang Prabang to collect alms. Afterward visit the Royal Palace, featuring rooms decorated in traditional Lao style. The palace houses historic relics of the ancient Lao Kingdom, including the historic “prabang” figure, a pure golden Buddha image after which the town is named. After, visit the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre to learn more about the different minorities in Laos. Free time this afternoon to explore town or climb Phousi Hill for a panoramic view of the town.
Fly to Siem Reap, city of temples
Fly to the ruined capital of the powerful Khmer kingdom. Angkor flourished from the 10th to the 15th centuries and comprises some 400 sandstone, brick and laterite temples, walls, tombs and other structures surrounded by jungle. The afternoon takes you to Preah Khan, the “Sacred Sword” temple dedicated by Jayavarman VII to his father, and to Neak Pean, a temple built as a sort of healing center, with pools representing water, earth, wind, and fire. Finish the day at Ta Prohm and experience the feeling of a modern day Indiana Jones as you explore this temple that is slowly being swallowed up by the jungle.
Discover the wonders of Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat
Set out for Angkor Thom, royal city of the 12th century god-king Jayavarman VII. Explore Bayon, with its 54 symmetrical towers topped by giant stone faces, and the Terrace of the Leper King. Enjoy an afternoon rest at your hotel during the heat of the day, then continue your temple exploration with the jewel of Cambodia: Angkor Wat, whose temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. This 12th century masterpiece is considered the prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture, and combines Buddhist and Hindu imagery on a vast scale.
Temples and more
Discover Banteay Srei, dating back to the 10th century and regarded as the epitome of classical Khmer art, then visit Banteay Samre, one of the most complete complexes at Angkor.
You have a number of options for the afternoon. You might head to Tonle Sap Lake to see floating villages on the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia, or visit remote Beng Mealea, a long abandoned 11th century temple, strangled by the jungle and left to the elements. Another option is Les Artisans d’Angkor – Chantiers Ecoles, a center working with young artisans to teach them traditional crafts to support the local communities. More options abound: speak with your Vaya Asia Specialist for more ideas.
