Day 1: Arrive in Colonia del Sacramento

Welcome to Uruguay! Upon arrival in Colonia del Sacramento, meet your private guide for a transfer from the port to your hotel in the Old Town. In the afternoon, enjoy a private walking tour through this UNESCO World Heritage city. Founded by the Portuguese and later contested by both Spain and Portugal, Colonia’s layered history is reflected in its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. Visit landmarks such as the Portón de Campo, Calle de los Suspiros, Plaza Mayor, and the Iglesia Matriz, the oldest church in Uruguay. Conclude with a traditional mate tasting to learn about the country’s most beloved drink and its cultural significance.

Day 2: Colonia Cheese, Wine, and Olives

Set out for a day trip to Bodega El Quinton for a guided visit of the vineyards and olive groves, followed by tastings of their wines and olive oils. Continue to La Vigna Cheese Farm to meet Agustín and Lucila, the owners behind this sustainably run, organic farm. Learn about their production methods and enjoy a tasting led by the “Cheese Architect,” sampling some of the region’s most distinctive and inventive cheeses. Return to Colonia del Sacramento in the late afternoon and have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 3: Travel to Carmelo with a Cooking Class and Sunset Crusie

Travel with your guide to Carmelo, stopping en route at Calera de las Huérfanas, a national monument where Uruguay’s early history and culinary traditions come to life. Take part in a hands-on cooking class at the historic Jesuit ruins with local chef Laura, who will share how the Jesuits once prepared their meals. Prepare traditional dishes such as empanadas, locro stew, and dulce de leche pancakes, paired with local wine and a welcome drink. Afterward, enjoy lunch featuring the dishes you’ve created.

In the afternoon, continue to Puerto Camacho for a scenic sunset cruise on the Río de la Plata, departing from the quiet marina of Club del Faro. Sail through the delta islands where the Río de la Plata and Río Uruguay meet, and toast to the day as the sun sets over the water.

Day 4: Carmelo Wineries

Tasting experience with a glass of Barolo wine in Alba (Piedmont, Italy)

Meet your local guide for a full-day tour of Carmelo’s famed wineries. Begin at Bodega El Legado, a small family-run winery. Enjoy a guided tour of the vineyards, cellar, and production areas, followed by a tasting of three wines paired with local cheeses, salami, and olives.

Continue to Bodega Cordano, now in its fifth generation. Visit their vineyards and the historic Almacén de la Capilla, a charming country store established in 1855. End the visit with a tasting of three of their signature wines and a homemade lunch.

Day 5: Travel to and Tour Montevideo

Today you’ll travel from Carmelo to Montevideo. Upon arrival, meet your local guide for a walking tour of Montevideo’s Old City. Explore Independence Square and learn about the surrounding landmarks, including Palacio Salvo, the Presidential Offices, and the mausoleum of national hero José Gervasio Artigas. Continue along Sarandí Street to Matriz Square, home to the city’s cathedral and historic Cabildo. The tour ends at the lively Port Market, where you’ll enjoy lunch surrounded by traditional asado grills and local eateries.

In the afternoon, visit two museums of your choice – such as the MAPI (Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art), the Torres García Museum, or the Gurvich Museum – each offering insight into Uruguay’s rich artistic heritage.

Day 6: Explore Modern Montevideo

Set out with your guide to explore Montevideo’s modern districts and landmarks. The tour begins at Plaza Independencia, where the Old City once stood before its walls were demolished in 1829, marking the start of Montevideo’s expansion. From here, follow Avenida 18 de Julio, and visit Plaza Fabini, also known as Plaza del Entrevero, to see José Belloni’s striking sculpture depicting a historic battle scene, and admire views of the marble-clad Palacio Legislativo, one of Latin America’s most impressive government buildings. Continue through the “Ciudad Abierta,” the open city, with its parks, monuments, and elegant residential neighborhoods such as Carrasco and Punta Gorda. Day 7: Travel to Pueblo Edén

Depart Montevideo with your guide for a scenic drive to the Pueblo Edén region. En route, stop at Olivos de las Ánimas, a family-owned olive estate set in the foothills of Cerro de las Ánimas.

Learn about the process of producing premium extra virgin olive oil while taking in the tranquil countryside views. Enjoy a guided tasting and a homemade lunch at the home of the owner, Martín, who shares his passion for the land and its products. The surrounding area is rich in wildlife: keep an eye out for colorful red and blue cardinals, elegant rheas, and other native species that inhabit these rolling hills.

Arrive in Pueblo Edén in the late afternoon and have the rest of the day at your leisure.

Day 8: Hiking and Wine Tasting

Meet your guide and set out for the nearby town of Pueblo Edén, a quiet rural community surrounded by rolling hills. Visit the town’s small chapel and main square before beginning a scenic hike along local trails once used by residents traveling between nearby ranches. Pass through countryside gates, native woodlands, open pastures with grazing cattle and sheep, and a small stream as you make your way through this peaceful landscape. After roughly eight kilometers, end your hike at Viña Edén Winery, where you’ll enjoy a well-earned lunch with views across the vineyards.

Day 9: Garzón Vineyards and Travel to José Ignacio

Today you’ll travel to José Ignacio via Bodega Garzón, one of Uruguay’s most celebrated wineries.Begin with a short stop in the quiet town of Garzón to see its main square, chapel, and old train station before continuing to the winery. Built on a rocky hilltop, Bodega Garzón offers sweeping views of the surrounding vineyards, known for their mineral-rich soils that produce exceptional grapes. Enjoy a guided tour of the facilities followed by a tasting and leisurely lunch showcasing local flavors before continuing to José Ignacio.

The tour consists of a walk of approximately 3 hours through rolling countryside, arriving to breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the raucous barks of hundreds of sea lions and fur seals. Enjoy a seaside lunch before returning through the sand dunes on a 4×4 vehicle.
