Julie Bates

Destination Specialist - Africa and Australasia

Julie’s journey in the travel industry began with a year in Egypt, where she immersed herself in local culture, navigated bustling souqs, explored ancient tombs, and cruised down the Nile as a tour leader. That first taste of adventure sparked a deep love for Africa, leading her from the savannahs of Kenya to the southern coast of South Africa. Her travels eventually brought her to Aotearoa New Zealand, where a passion for kayaking led her to the spectacular Marlborough Sounds. She spent two years living and working in New Zealand as a sea kayaking & hiking guide, soaking up the country’s natural beauty and outdoor lifestyle. Australia also holds a special place in Julie’s heart. She’s made multiple trips across the Tasman, drawn to the contrast of golden beaches, red desert landscapes and the safari of Australia in the outback. Julie now calls Alberta, Canada home, where she and her Kiwi husband are raising their two boys. When she’s not hiking in the Rockies, you can find her cheering on her two boys at hockey or rugby games.

Julie has five years of experience living and working on the ground in both Australasia and Africa, along with 12 years in travel sales focused on these regions. She designs tailor-made journeys across Africa and the Middle East—including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Madagascar, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan—as well as Australasia, including New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji.
