Lemala Wildwaters: An Unforgettable Finale for Any East African Safari

Return to Journal

After spending time on safari, tracking mountain gorillas or chimpanzees, and marveling at the diverse landscapes of Eastern Africa, there is no better grand finale to your trip than a few days spent relaxing and recovering at Lemala Wildwaters.

Set on a private island in the middle of the Nile River and only accessible by boat, Wildwaters offers the ideal setting for transitioning from action and adventure to relaxation and recovery. With its peaceful riverfront setting, a design that immerses guests in nature, exceptional food and all-inclusive service, and access to activities like whitewater rafting and river cruises, Wildwaters is a memorable final chapter to an unforgettable African adventure.

After spending two weeks exploring Uganda and ending my trip with a few nights at Wildwaters, I can confidently confirm that a stay at this beautiful lodge is the perfect way to conclude a trip. Although words can’t accurately depict the intricacies of this incredible property or the absolute bliss I felt after spending two nights there, I’ll do the best I can with this journal entry.

The Perfect Escape

Lemala Wildwaters sits on a private, forested island in the middle of the Nile River, surrounded by powerful white-water rapids that create both a dramatic setting and a constant, soothing soundtrack. Its location and surroundings naturally insulate the lodge from the outside world, making it easy to disconnect and unwind. Although the lodge is equipped with wifi, connection is optional.

The heart of the lodge features open-air dining and lounge spaces, relaxation areas for reading, journaling, or playing games, and a swimming pool perched alongside the rapids. Each area is designed to immerse guests in the sights and sounds of the Nile while maintaining a refined safari-lodge atmosphere.

Raised wooden walkways wind through the trees and across granite rocks, connecting the island’s central dining, lounge, and river-edge pool areas to a collection of spacious, private bandas.

Each banda is its own riverside retreat, set along the island’s edge with a deck hovering above the water, an airy open-plan design, and luxurious amenities. Its immersive indoor/outdoor design allows guests to fall asleep and wake up to the sounds of the rushing river and spend time connecting with their truly wild surroundings.

A Relaxing Retreat

After days of safari game drives, forest treks, and constant adventure, Lemala Wildwaters offers the ideal setting to slow down and truly unwind. Days spent here are effortlessly relaxing: swimming in the iconic river-edge pool, lounging on the sundeck, enjoying the open bar, booking a massage, or simply watching the Nile surge around the rocks below.

Each day begins with the soft morning light filtering through the forest canopy and the steady roar of the river beyond your deck, creating a rhythm that naturally calms the mind. Evenings unfold with sundowners on your veranda, cocktails by the pool, and leisurely dinners, where the lodge’s laid-back, all-inclusive comfort allows you to fully relax, reflect, and savor the moment.

The feeling of having nothing to do and nowhere to go, in combination with the rush and roar of the water, can bring even the busiest of minds to a standstill. Myself included.

Culinary Excellence in the Middle of the Nile

Another highlight of Wildwaters is the food, cocktails, and dining experience. Meals are a la carte throughout the day, with a full menu available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The menu includes a mix of locally inspired Ugandan dishes as well as international favorites, all professionally prepared and beautifully presented. I highly recommend trying the locally caught Nile Perch and other fresh fish dishes.

Whether you’re enjoying breakfast overlooking the rapids, a leisurely lunch by the pool, or a candlelit dinner in the dining pavilion, every dining experience feels special and memorable due to the attentive staff, unique setting, and excellent food.

Adventure Opportunities

Although Wildwaters is the ideal place to slow down and relax, its location also serves as a great base for some of the most exciting adventure activities in Uganda.

To balance your relaxation time with some adrenaline, nearby Jinja is known for whitewater rafting and kayaking, bungee jumping, and quad biking. You can also opt for more laid-back alternatives like nature walks, horseback riding, fishing, or a trip to the source of the Nile River.

All activities can be booked in advance or directly with the lodge, subject to availability.

Ending your trip at Lemala Wildwaters is the cherry on top of a fantastic experience in Eastern Africa. It’s peaceful without being boring, adventurous without being exhausting, and luxurious without feeling disconnected from its environment. Few properties manage to strike this balance.
