The Best Things to Do in Kigali, Rwanda

Spread across dozens of rolling hills and valleys, Kigali is a beautiful, green city that is easy to explore, culturally rich, and welcoming to visitors. It’s filled with modern cafes and restaurants, lively markets, and interesting art exhibitions and museums. Whether you’re interested in Rwanda’s history, its colorful art scene, or its world-class coffee, the city has something for everyone.

Due to common flight schedules and in-country transportation, most travelers visiting Rwanda will spend at least one night in Kigali before embarking on their next adventure — safari in Akagera National Park, boating on Lake Kivu, hiking in Nyungwe National Park, or searching for mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzees in Kibale National Park.

Beyond being a convenient overnight stop, Kigali has a great deal to offer and deserves more time in any itinerary. After a recent five-day visit to this vibrant capital city, I highly encourage all Vaya guests to allot some extra time in Kigali to explore their interests with a private guide and driver or on a structured city tour.

Kigali Genocide Memorial and Museum

Rwanda is known for the tragic genocide that claimed the lives of nearly 800,000 people in 1994. Though three decades have passed, the impact of that violence is still deeply felt and woven into everyday life. To truly understand how Rwanda’s turbulent past shaped its remarkably peaceful and progressive present, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial and Museum is essential.

The memorial serves both as an educational space — documenting the genocide against the Tutsi and other global genocides — and as the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims. Thoughtfully curated exhibits and an excellent audio guide provide detailed information and powerful context, making the experience somber but vital, and offering meaningful insight into Rwanda’s resilience, unity, and modern cultural identity.

Take a Coffee Masterclass at Question Coffee

Rwanda is known for its high-quality coffee. Its tropical climate and volcanic soil are ideal for growing coffee beans, and its producers have become experts in cultivating, harvesting, processing, roasting, and brewing an exceptional cup. While you’re in Kigali, it only makes sense to learn how your daily dose of caffeine makes its way from farm to cup.

Question Coffee is one of the most popular cafes and coffee experiences in the city. Their entire supply chain is women-owned and operated, from their farms and processing facilities to their cafes. Question offers two experiences that guide guests from seed to cup: a two-hour masterclass hosted at their Coffee Centre in Kigali and a full-day farm visit at one of their cooperatives outside the city in Kayonza.

Even if you don’t have time for a masterclass, I highly recommend visiting one of their cafes in the Gishushu or Kiyovu neighborhoods and picking up a bag of beans to enjoy once you’re home.

Explore the Local Art Scene

Kigali is the epicenter of art and creativity in a nation known for its rich culture. Immerse yourself in the colors, styles, and textures of the city through one of its many creative offerings — contemplate local work in a gallery, admire public murals in one of the prominent art neighborhoods, participate in a hands-on crafts class, or wander through local markets in search of handmade goods.

Get a Sense of Local Life in Nyamirambo

Nyamirambo is one of Kigali’s most vibrant neighborhoods, known for its colorful streets, bustling markets, and Muslim heritage. The best way to immerse yourself in this area is through a grassroots walking tour with the Nyamirambo Women’s Center.

This tour gives guests an authentic glimpse into daily life in Kigali through stops at the local market, public gathering areas, and essential community businesses. All proceeds directly benefit the community and provide jobs for local women. The tour is relatively short but ideal for anyone hoping to experience the city beyond its main attractions.

You’ll also learn about the women’s center and their efforts to educate and empower local women. At the end of the tour, visit their storefront and pick up a handmade textile or weaving product to further support their work.

Drive or Hike to the Top of Mount Kigali

A short drive to the top of Mount Kigali rewards you with panoramic views over the city and a perfect visual of why Rwanda earned its nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”

Relax and take in the view with a drink at one of the small cafes perched at the summit. Inzora Café is a hidden gem serving excellent coffee and light bites. If you’re feeling adventurous, activities including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and ziplining are available from the top — arrange any of these at least one day in advance.

Visit Umusambi Village Wildlife Sanctuary

Umusambi Village is a restored wetland area and wildlife sanctuary located within the Kigali city limits, known for excellent birdwatching and nature trails. It’s the perfect stop for anyone looking to escape the city or spot Rwanda’s national bird, the endangered Grey Crowned Crane.

The sanctuary is home to approximately fifty endangered Grey Crowned Cranes and over 100 other native and migratory bird species. It also features medicinal plant and butterfly gardens and serves as the base for several conservation and rewilding projects managed by the Rwanda Wildlife Conservation Association.

Kigali has some of the best restaurants in Africa, with diverse, high-quality cuisine at a range of price points. Its progressive reputation, flourishing hospitality sector, and growing economy have attracted talented chefs and ambitious restaurant concepts, and new dining experiences continue to emerge.
