Search for penguins and animals as you leave the city behind and head out for a day of exploration with your private guide. Visit the seals in the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay. Stop for some treats at a local bakery, enjoy a hot chocolate, and listen to a few of the local shark stories or try your hand at fishing.

Heading back out away from town, discover a local beach that is home to penguins. Dip your feet in the sea water and try your hand at stand-up paddle boarding or kayaking to get an up-close look at these fascinating little creatures.

From there, continue on to Cape Point to seek out the Cape 5: ostriches, baboons, mountain zebra, bontebok, and tortoises. Wander along hiking trails through indigenous fynbos, past hidden coves and rocky beaches. Learn about the shipwrecks on this coastline, keeping an eye out for lost treasure, then head up the funicular or take a gentle hike to the Cape Point Lighthouse, for an incredible panoramic view over the ocean. Take the scenic return drive back to the city, stopping along the way at a local farm village for homemade ice cream.

Day 3: Table Mountain and City Tour

Top view of the Atlantic Ocean. National Park Table Mountain, South Africa, Cape Town

See all of Cape Town at your feet from the top of Table Mountain. Take a scenic cable car ride to the top, as the vistas of the city and surrounding ocean are slowly revealed. At the top, explore the mountain top and look for dassie (local rock rabbits), then visit a cafe for a well-earned hot chocolate and delicious local baked goods.

Returning to sea level, you have the option to hop on bikes and cycle along the Sea Point Promenade. Explore the coast, letting the kids lead the way with their own interactive maps. Stop at art installations en route, and hear the story of Nelson Mandela while gazing out toward Robben Island, where he spent so many years imprisoned. Staying safe and off road, head into Green Point Park for a fun look at the unique Cape flora and fauna before lunch.

After lunch, explore the city’s uplifting urban art projects, District Six and interactive sites like the Apartheid Benches, which bring to life the history which has shaped South Africa. This is terrific for teens and older children. Families with younger kids can head to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens for an afternoon of exploration within the estate. Follow a treasure map along tree-top canopy walkways and prehistoric cycad gardens. Jump over steppingstones, climb Van Riebeek’s historic hedge, and barrel down lawns in search of Claud the Clawless Otter.
